The Winter Satellite Workshop (WSW) is one of the largest annual Earth Observation events in Finland and the biggest New Space meeting in Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. It brings together over 500 space technology specialists, scientists and students to discuss current topics in a rapidly developing space field.

Last week, the FCM consortium had the opportunity to participate in the ‘Second Forum on Earth Observation for Carbon Markets’. This year, the forum was held in conjunction with the ‘EO for improving LULUCF Monitoring, reporting and verification’ meeting.
While waiting for the finalization of the plans for the project extension, we would like to highlight some key developments that took place since the end of the main phase of the Forest Carbon Monitoring (FCM) project. The project was highlighted in several occasions in different types of events and media.
The long-awaited Forest Carbon Monitoring User Workshop was finally held in sunny Espoo, Finland, on the 1-2 March 2023. This was the culmination point of the cooperation with our user partners, who have been supporting the project from the very beginning.
A workshop entitled “Towards harmonised forest monitoring and reporting for the EU” was organized in context of the Swedish Presidency on 1-2 February 2023 in Uppsala, Sweden. This workshop was a a follow-up to the workshop held in Kutná Hora in September 2022 during the Czech EU Council Presidency, to build on the outcomes of that meeting.

Last week, the Forest Carbon Monitoring team participated in the 4th Carbon from Space Workshop, which brought together the Earth observation, in situ and Earth system science communities to interact and discuss the challenges in understanding the carbon cycle, focusing particularly on the terrestrial component.
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, within the EU Presidency programme, organized a workshop entitled “Towards harmonised Forest Observation, Reporting and Data Collection Framework – are we there yet?” The workshop was held in the beautiful setting of Kutná Hora, a historic town which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, on 14-16 September 2022.
The Forest Carbon Monitoring project is well represented in the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2022 taking place this week in Bonn, Germany.
